In 1905, Little Boars Head became the district of North Hampton. In the early 1800s Little Boars Head was a small fishing and farming community with few residents until the coming of the railroads when it became attractive to visitors as a desirable seaside location to spend time during the summer months. In 1862, the "Bell Cottage" was built, which was the first "summer cottage." More summer residences were built, along with boarding houses and Hotels. Little Boars Head is a twin headland, the other being great Boars Head, three miles to the south. Setting high above the ocean, Little Boars Head offers one of the most majestic views along the New Hampshire coastline. This is where Alvan T. Fuller purchased a parcel of land in 1914, then continued land acquisitions in North Hampton for some time, eventually owning a large expanse of land in this area. Fuller had an imposing house built on the east side of Willow avenue, (Just across the street from the present day Fuller Gardens) and next door to the New Hampshire Governor Huntley Spaulding. Fuller also owned a number of parcels of land on Atlantic Avenue, where he raised and bred prized Guernsey Cows. Famous Architects designed many fine residences in North Hampton, however all were built by local craftsmen. Around 1915-16 Warren B. Moulton was responsible for building the Alvan T. Fuller summer residence, as well as the Dairy Farm on Atlantic Avenue. An article in Architecture magazine in August, 1920 describes the house and grounds as: "Among the fine residences that line the shore drive which links the old historic city of Newburyport with its New Hampshire neighbor, Portsmouth, there is no more interesting summer house than that of Honorable Alvan T. Fuller at Little Boars Head. It stands back from the road, with only the high road lying between its wide sweeping lawn and the sea." The Alvan T. Fuller summer residence was torn down in 1961 after his death, however, the property remains in the Fuller Family. |
