SEPTEMBER
Perennials & Annuals:
  • Lift and divide perennials in need of separation. Amend soil with organic matter such as compost or decomposed manure before replanting. Add super phosphate to promote root growth. Do not fertilize.
Roses:
  • Pull petals off the flowers. This promotes hip development and slows down lush growth, thus stimulating the plant to build up winter reserves.
  • Water every 10 to 14 days if weather is dry (2" weekly).
  • Maintain pest monitoring and prevention with regular deadheading tours through the garden.
  • Revert to full strength spraying as temperature cools and need arises.
  • Apply lime to correct pH balance for next spring.
Lawn:
  • Seed in the first 1/2 of month.
  • Fall is the best time to fertilize (20-8-8).
  • Aerate to relieve compacting and reduce thatch build up.
  • Spray for broadleaf weeds (not newly seeded lawns), this is the most effective time for weed control.
Trees and Shrubs:
  • Plant trees and shrubs and continue to water every 10 to 14 days if weather is dry.
