Perennials & Annuals:
  • After ground has frozen, cover perennials with salt marsh hay or straw * (note: do not use hay as it contains weed seeds).
Roses:
  • After ground has frozen cover roses with salt marsh hay or straw to insulate the ground and keep it frozen. *
  • Cover climbers with burlap to protect from winter winds. Diagrams and explanations.
Trees and Shrubs:
  • Evergreens and shrubs may need extra protection, such as a wind screen made out of burlap and/or mulch at the base, especially if newly planted.
  • Spray evergreens with anti-transpirant.
  • Be sure ground is frozen before mulching. *

* Critters are looking for winter homes before the ground freezes. Therefore if mulch is laid before the ground is frozen these critters will make your mulch their home and your plant material their winter feed.
